Four days for Scotland’s quieter, older side. This private itinerary crosses Glencoe to the Isle of Mull, known for its wildlife, sails on to Iona, often called the cradle of Christianity in Scotland, explores Mull’s wild north coast and Tobermory, and comes home through the standing stones of Kilmartin Glen and Inveraray.

The 4-day Mull & Iona itinerary, day by day
Day 1Loch Lomond, Glencoe and the ferries to Mull

We leave early for Loch Lomond, climbing to viewpoints over Luss and the loch, and hear about the ancient fault line that divides the Highlands from the Lowlands. Then it’s into the heart of the Highlands across Rannoch Moor to the Three Sisters of Glencoe.
The first of two ferries crosses Loch Linnhe at Corran to the Morvern peninsula, where the remains of an old township tell the story of the communities cleared from the land. A second ferry takes us across the Sound of Mull to the island and our accommodation.
Day 2Duart Castle and the Isle of Iona

We start at Duart Castle, stronghold of Clan MacLean and still owned by the clan chief. Then we head southwest to Fionnphort for the short ferry to Iona, often called the cradle of Christianity in Scotland.
We walk through the village to Iona Abbey, site of St Columba’s monastery and still a place of pilgrimage. Back on Mull, we stop at the ruins of Aros Castle, with views over the Sound of Mull and a tale of shifting clan loyalties.
Day 3Mull’s wild north and Tobermory

A day in northern Mull, starting with a walk to the mysterious Kilmore standing stones. At Calgary, a coastal walk leads to a Highland Clearance village and the story of families moved off the land for sheep in the late 18th and 19th centuries.
We follow the northwest coast, with views over the Treshnish Isles and Ulva, stop at the Eas Fors waterfalls, and finish with a whisky tasting at Tobermory Distillery.
Day 4Oban, Kilmartin Glen and Inveraray

An early ferry takes us from Craignure to Oban, then south to Kilmartin Glen. We explore the Nether Largie standing stones and Temple Wood stone circles, and climb Dunadd Fort, once the seat of the kings of an ancient kingdom, where a stone carries the print of a foot. A forest walk leads to one of Scotland’s largest collections of prehistoric rock art.
Then it’s Inveraray Castle, home of the Dukes of Argyll and chiefs of Clan Campbell, and the Rest and Be Thankful viewpoint over Glen Croe and the old military road, before we drop you off.

Beforehand we worked with Scotlands Wild on the itinerary, wanting to see more nature and active hikes than castles and distilleries (though we did do a couple of castles). We started in Glasgow, drove north seeing Loch Lomond, Oban, Isle of Skye, Glencoe, Inverness, Loch Ness, Ft William and many other interesting sites along the way. … Ended in Edinburgh and were sad to leave him.

Bespoke private tours of this length (trips of 4 to 5 days) typically cost £6,500–£9,500 in total for the whole group, based on tours booked with us over the last two years. Group size, accommodation, the season and the experiences you choose can change this a lot, so tell us your budget and we’ll plan around it.
What’s included?
Your own guide and private vehicle (with fuel and taxes), planning and booking by your tour coordinator, and 24/7 support. Most bespoke tours also include your accommodation and entry to the places you visit. Food and drink are not included.
How many ferries are there?
On this route: Corran and the Sound of Mull on day 1, the short crossing to Iona and back on day 2, and Craignure to Oban on day 4. Your guide and vehicle travel with you, apart from Iona, which you visit on foot.
Is this itinerary suitable for a family or a large group?
