Overview

Loch Ness, Glenfinnan and the Cairngorms in one day from Inverness

Start on the water. From Clansman Harbour, the Jacobite cruise sails down Loch Ness to Urquhart Castle, where you have an hour to explore the ruins and your guide meets you with the vehicle. Then follow the Great Glen past Fort Augustus and Fort William to Glenfinnan, where the viaduct the Hogwarts Express crosses in the Harry Potter films curves above Loch Shiel.

Instead of driving back the same way, the afternoon is a loop home: past the Commando Memorial below Ben Nevis, along Loch Laggan and over to Ruthven Barracks, where the Jacobites gathered for the last time after Culloden, then into Aviemore in the Cairngorms National Park. It’s the story of Bonnie Prince Charlie’s rising from start to finish, and with no more than 16 travellers there’s room to ask questions at every stop.

Your Glenfinnan tour from Inverness: the itinerary

Loading the route map…

Your route: Inverness → Clansman Harbour → optional Loch Ness cruise to Urquhart Castle → Fort Augustus → Fort William → Glenfinnan → Commando Memorial → Loch Laggan → Ruthven Barracks → Aviemore → Inverness · about 300 km (187 miles) by road

Stop 1

Loch Ness cruise & Urquhart Castle

Clansman Harbour · Cruise · Urquhart Castle
Check-in 8:30am · Departs 8:45am · Cruise and castle approx. 10:00am–11:40am

A short drive down the shore of Loch Ness brings you to Clansman Harbour.

Sail down Loch Ness, keeping an eye out for Nessie, and step ashore at Urquhart Castle for about an hour exploring the ruins and the Grant Tower on their point above the water. Your guide meets you at the castle, so there’s no sailing back. The cruise and castle ticket is optional and not included; if you’d rather not cruise, travel to the castle with your guide by road and pay for castle entry on the day.

Stop 2

Fort Augustus

Loch Ness · Caledonian Canal
Approx. 12:15pm–12:30pm

Follow the loch to Fort Augustus at its southern tip for a comfort stop beside the flight of Caledonian Canal locks.

Stop 3

Glenfinnan Viaduct & Monument

Viaduct viewpoint · Loch Shiel · Lunch
Approx. 1:45pm–3:30pm

Continue down the Great Glen to Fort William, below Ben Nevis, and west along the Road to the Isles to Glenfinnan.

Walk up to the viewpoint above the 21-arch viaduct that the Hogwarts Express crosses in the Harry Potter films, about 20 minutes uphill on a rough path. Below, the Glenfinnan Monument stands at the head of Loch Shiel, where Bonnie Prince Charlie raised his standard in August 1745 to start the Jacobite rising.

There’s time for lunch at the visitor centre café, or bring a packed lunch. Lunch isn’t included.

In 2026 the Jacobite steam train’s return journey usually crossed the viaduct at about 3:15pm, between June and late October, while we’re there. It runs to its own timetable, so it can’t be guaranteed.

Stop 4

Commando Memorial & Loch Laggan

Spean Bridge · Ben Nevis views · Loch Laggan
Approx. 4:10pm–5:00pm

Stop at the Commando Memorial above Spean Bridge, which honours the Second World War commandos who trained in these hills, with views across to Ben Nevis.

Then turn east along Loch Laggan, past Ardverikie House across the water, which played Glenbogle in Monarch of the Glen, with a photo stop by the loch.

Stop 5

Ruthven Barracks

Kingussie · The end of the Jacobite rising
Approx. 5:40pm–6:00pm

Climb the short slope to the ruins of Ruthven Barracks, built after the 1715 rising to watch over the Highlands.

In April 1746, after Culloden, the remaining Jacobites gathered here, until word came from the Prince to “let every man seek his own safety”. Glenfinnan saw the rising begin; Ruthven is where it ended.

Stop 6

Aviemore & the road home

Cairngorms National Park · Coffee stop · Inverness
Aviemore approx. 6:25pm–6:45pm · back approx. 7:30pm

Finish in Aviemore, the main village of the Cairngorms National Park, the UK’s largest national park, for a coffee and a last look at the Cairngorm mountains.

Then it’s north on the A9 to Inverness, back at Rose Street at approximately 7:30pm. Traffic and weather can affect this, so avoid tightly timed onward travel.

The itinerary is a guide and may change because of weather, loch conditions, cruise timetables, road conditions, seasonal opening times, attraction availability or circumstances beyond our control.

What travellers say about our Glenfinnan and Loch Ness tours

★★★★★

We went to the 2 day tour to Harry Potter train and Loch Ness cruise from Edinburgh with our tour guide Matt. He was really the friendliest and most professional and helpful tour guide i have ever had… He is a very knowledgeable person of Scottish history and his driving skills were very good as it was a very calm and relaxing drive throughout the highlands.

★★★★★

He is brilliantly knowledgeable about Scottish history, but the way he shares it is engaging, inviting, non-intimidating, and completely relatable. Honestly, if I’d had a history teacher like John growing up, I might have actually enjoyed history class!

★★★★★

We loved the small group experience because it allowed us to get to know our group, but also experience parts of The Highlands that the big buses can’t get to.

FAQs

Before your adventure

Can you visit the Glenfinnan Viaduct on a day trip from Inverness?

Yes. This small-group day tour leaves Inverness at 8:45am and is back at approximately 7:30pm. It starts with the chance to cruise Loch Ness to Urquhart Castle, spends the early afternoon at Glenfinnan, and comes home through Loch Laggan, Ruthven Barracks and Aviemore.

How far is Glenfinnan from Inverness?

Glenfinnan is about 83 miles (133 km) from Inverness, roughly 2 hours by road along Loch Ness and through Fort William. The whole loop is about 187 miles (300 km), around 5 hours on the road, broken up by the cruise and six stops.

Is the Loch Ness cruise included?

No. The cruise is optional and paid on the day. It sails one way from Clansman Harbour to Urquhart Castle, the ticket includes castle entry, and you have about an hour to explore before your guide collects you there. If you’d rather not cruise, travel with your guide by road and visit the castle instead (entry paid on the day).

Will we see the Harry Potter steam train at Glenfinnan?

Possibly. In 2026 the Jacobite steam train ran from June to late October, and its return journey usually crossed the viaduct at about 3:15pm, while we’re there. It runs to its own timetable, often a little late, so it can’t be guaranteed, and it didn’t run in April or May. You’ll see the viaduct either way.

Do we ride the Jacobite steam train?

No. You see the viaduct, and the train when it’s running, from the viewpoint above. Train tickets are sold separately by the railway.

Does this tour go to Glencoe?

No. To give you time on Loch Ness and at Glenfinnan and a different road home, this tour loops back through Loch Laggan and the Cairngorms instead. For Glencoe, see our Glencoe day tour from Glasgow.

How much walking is there?

Short walks only. Urquhart Castle has steps and uneven ground, and the path up to the viaduct viewpoint takes about 20 minutes and is steep near the top; the other stops are a few minutes from the vehicle. You can always stay lower down by the monument and Loch Shiel.

How big is the group?

No more than 16 travellers on scheduled tours, in a modern touring vehicle, so every stop is quick to get off and on.

How do I secure my place, and what is the cancellation policy?

A 50% deposit is taken when you book; the balance is collected automatically 8 days before departure. Cancellations 8 or more days before departure: full refund. 3–7 days before: 50% refund. Less than 3 days before, or no-show: no refund. Full terms & conditions →

Are there age restrictions?

The minimum age is 12. If you're travelling with younger children, ask us about a private tour.

Where and when does the tour depart, and when is it back?

Check in at 8:30am outside Starbucks, Rose Street Car Park, Rose Street, Inverness, IV1 1NQ, for an 8:45am departure. We’re back at the same place at approximately 7:30pm; traffic and weather can affect this, so avoid tightly timed onward travel. Paid multi-storey parking is available around Rose Street.

When does this tour run?

It’s new for 2027 and runs every Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday from 1 April to 31 October 2027. Every date is on sale now: pick one in the booking calendar. Prices are from £98 per adult in early April and October, and £108 from 16 April to 30 September.

What should I wear and bring?

Waterproof clothing, warm layers and walking shoes with good grip, as it can be breezy on the boat and Highland weather changes quickly. Midge repellent between June and September is worth packing, and sun cream on brighter days. Please bring only a small day bag; contact us first if you need to travel with larger luggage.

Are food and drinks included?

No. Lunch is at Glenfinnan, at the visitor centre café or with a packed lunch, so a snack for the morning is a good idea, and there's a coffee stop in Aviemore. For strict gluten-free or complex dietary needs, a packed lunch is recommended.

Will there be bathroom breaks?

Yes. There are toilets at Urquhart Castle, Fort Augustus, the Glenfinnan visitor centre and Aviemore, and your guide will let you know when the next stop is.

What if the weather is bad?

The tour runs in Scotland's changeable weather, and rain alone won't cancel it. If the loch is too rough for the cruise, your guide will adjust the plan, for example by driving to Urquhart Castle instead.
