The Glencoe Massacre
Glencoe’s beauty makes its history feel even more striking.
In February 1692, members of the MacDonald clan were killed following a complicated chain of political events, divided loyalties and government orders.
The circumstances surrounding the killings — particularly the fact that soldiers had received hospitality from the people they later attacked — gave the event an enduring place in Highland memory.

What happened during the Glencoe Massacre?
The Glencoe Massacre took place in February 1692 during a period of political tension following the change of monarchy in Britain.
Members of government forces who had been staying among the MacDonalds of Glencoe received orders that ultimately led to members of the clan being killed.
The combination of politics, clan relationships and violated hospitality helped make the event one of the most remembered episodes in Highland history.
What is the minimum age for scheduled Glencoe tours?
Our scheduled group tours are generally for travellers aged 12 and over.
If you are travelling with younger children, a private tour may be a better option because the itinerary can be organised specifically around your own group.

Highland weather changes quickly, so layers and a waterproof outer layer are useful throughout the year.
Comfortable, sturdy shoes are important for short walks and uneven terrain. In colder months, bring additional warm clothing, while midge repellent can be useful during warmer periods.
What happens if the weather is bad?
Rain is a normal part of Highland travel and does not automatically mean a tour will be cancelled.
Glencoe can actually be particularly atmospheric in changing weather, but safety always comes first. Severe conditions, road closures or other circumstances can sometimes require stops or routes to change.
Are meals and attraction tickets included?
Meals, snacks and most optional paid attractions are generally separate from the advertised scheduled-tour price.
