What Actually Happens Inside a Distillery?
Individual distilleries have their own methods and equipment, but the basic journey from grain to Scotch follows a familiar sequence.
Malting
Barley is encouraged to germinate so enzymes can begin converting its stored starches.
Mashing
The malt is milled and mixed with hot water to extract fermentable sugars into a liquid called wort.
Fermentation
Yeast converts those sugars into alcohol and creates many of the flavour compounds that remain in the spirit.
Distillation
Copper stills concentrate the alcohol while helping shape the character and purity of the new spirit.
Maturation
The spirit rests in oak casks for years, drawing colour and flavour from the wood and its previous contents.
The Dram
Casks can be bottled individually or combined to create the flavour profile the distillery is looking for.

These are the clearest scheduled choices if visiting a working whisky distillery is an important part of your day.
Is the Glengoyne Distillery experience included in the tour price?
No. Glengoyne Distillery admission and whisky tasting are purchased separately from the Scotland’s Wild scheduled tour price.
This allows you to choose from the experience available for your departure rather than automatically including one fixed paid attraction for everyone.
Is Stirling Castle admission included?
No. Stirling Castle admission is also purchased separately.
Your Scotland’s Wild guide and transport are included, while the major paid attractions remain optional extras.
Do I need to drink whisky to enjoy the tour?
No.
The scheduled tours also explore Stirling Castle, Loch Lomond and Scottish history, so they work well for mixed groups where only some travellers are particularly interested in whisky.
You’re never required to drink alcohol.
What is the minimum age for the scheduled whisky tours?
Our scheduled Stirling Castle, Loch Lomond and whisky tours are for travellers aged 12 and over.
Alcoholic tastings are only available to guests who meet the legal age requirements, and individual distillery experiences may have their own visitor rules.
What is the difference between the Edinburgh and Glasgow tours?
Both tours visit Stirling Castle, Loch Lomond and Glengoyne Distillery.
The Edinburgh version is a longer day and also finishes with a visit to The Kelpies.
The Glasgow version is more compact, departing at approximately 9am and returning at around 4:10pm.
Do any of your Loch Ness tours include whisky?
Yes. Our Loch Ness day tour from Edinburgh includes a Highland whisky distillery stop, alongside The Hermitage, Loch Ness and Glencoe.
The two-day Loch Ness and Highlands tour also includes a Highland whisky opportunity on the first day.
Can you create a private Islay or Speyside whisky tour?
Yes. Whisky-focused private touring gives us much greater flexibility over region, route, duration and the distilleries you want to visit.
That can include regions such as Speyside, Islay, the Highlands, Lowlands and Campbeltown.

What should I wear on a whisky tour?
Remember that our scheduled whisky tours are also outdoor Scotland tours.
Bring sturdy walking shoes or boots, light waterproof clothing and warm layers appropriate for the season.
The Loch Lomond section includes outdoor walking and conditions can be wet or uneven.
Is it whisky or whiskey?
In Scotland it’s whisky, without an “e”. Whiskey is the usual spelling for Irish and most American spirits, which is why many visitors search for a Scotland whiskey tour.
Either way, our tours are about Scotch whisky, made in Scotland.
Can I do a whisky tour from Edinburgh?
Yes. The Stirling Castle, Loch Lomond & Kelpies Day Tour leaves Edinburgh at 8:30am and returns at approximately 6pm, visiting Glengoyne Distillery alongside Stirling Castle, Loch Lomond and the Kelpies.
It’s from £92 per person. Glengoyne Distillery and Stirling Castle admission are paid separately.
