History and Transformation

Originally erected in the 1500s as a noble residence, Corgarff Castle was a fortified stronghold for the Forbeses of Corgarff. The castle stood as a symbol of power and prestige, bearing witness to the stories of the clan. However, as centuries passed, the castle's purpose evolved.

In the mid-1700s, Corgarff Castle took on a new role as an army base. It became a focal point in the efforts to quell Jacobite sympathizers, demonstrating its pivotal role in shaping Scotland's historical narrative. Later, the castle's function shifted yet again, this time serving as a strategic outpost in the fight against whisky smugglers, highlighting its adaptable significance throughout different periods.

Visiting Details

Corgarff Castle welcomes visitors every Monday and Tuesday from 9.30am to 5.30pm, starting from Tuesday 1 August and extending to Tuesday 26 September. The last entry is at 4.30pm, and the castle briefly closes for lunch from 12.30pm to 1.30pm.
