What do we look for from our Tour Guides?

  • We want enthusiastic, passionate and outgoing people, willing to share Scotland with visitors from all over the world.

  • A natural interest in various aspects of Scotland, its history, wildlife, and culture

  • Someone who is willing to take the lead in a group situation and passionately share everything wonderful about Scotland, and consistently provide visitors with an unforgettable experience which will enhance their trip to Scotland

  • A good, skilled driver who is considerate of their passengers and comfort.

  • We have a mixed fleet of vans & minibuses, from 8-16 seaters, experience of driving vans or larger vehicles would be great

  • A storyteller. Scots have a reputation as good storytellers, and we look for people who can confidently bring Scotland to life through the art of storytelling.

  • Our Tour Guides must be able to think on their feet and be able to adapt to a variety of situations, and be comfortable in handling them

  • You will take pride in your role and have a natural flair for customer care

Essential skills & requirements for a Tour Guide

Skills

  • Excellent communication skills are essential as you'll be talking to clients from all over the world, from different backgrounds and cultures

  • Passion for Scotland and a Willingness to learn - if you're willing to learn and have a good, cheerful outlook, then we believe that any knowledge can be gained

  • Good, safe, and considerate driving skills of coaches and minibuses.

  • Critical thinking skills and initiative to ensure a wonderful experience for visitors

Requirements

  • A current and valid, full UK Driving license (with category D1 or D - license).

  • Must have held your driving licence for a minimum of 3 Years.

  • Able to start tours in Edinburgh.

  • Willingness to spend nights away.

  • High standard of customer service and care.

  • A level of fitness that will allow you to walk for up to 2 hours per day on a variety of terrain.

Desirable, though not essential

  • Previous Experience as a Tour Guide in Scotland

  • Experience driving vehicles such as a minibus

  • Experience driving larger vehicles such as Vans or larger vehicles

  • Previous experience working in a customer service role

  • 5-Star reviews on TripAdvisor and/or other review sites

  • Speak multiple languages

  • Experience working with diverse populations and cultures

  • First Aid Trained

Tour Guide Job Types

  • Full-time Salary of £28,600

  • Permanent & Temporary Contracts

  • Full-time and part-time Positions available - flexible working patterns can be discussed

  • Single Day and Multi Day, overnight tours

  • Working hours in peak season will be more than in off-season, with time in lieu earned and given back during the winter months

What you will be doing as a Tour Guide

A good portion of the day will include driving in Scotland’s Highlands and Lowlands, exploring and visiting desirable locations with visitors.

You will get the chance to go on short hikes for between 30 minutes to 1 hours per day throughout the duration of our Group Day Tours, though there is the possibility to guide on our one day West Highland Way, hiking, Day Tour of approx 4-5 hours and on private tours.

There is also the opportunity to work in other areas of the business. 

Daily Tour Guide Job Role

  • Share Scotland with passion and enthusiasm with Visitors

  • Complete daily vehicle safety checks to ensure a safe and comfortable tour

  • Provide constructive feedback to continuously improve the quality of the tours 

  • Continually develop your skills as a tour guide by learning a wide range of location, natural, cultural, historical and social knowledge 

  • Be a first point of contact for Experience Scotland’s Wild and represent the company in a professional and positive way

  • Safely drive our Vehicles ensuring clients get a comfortable and enjoyable experience as you tour

  • Take clients for short walks in Scotland

  • Potentially stay overnight in locations around Scotland on multi-day tours

  • During the off season, there is the likelihood to help with other roles in line with business needs
