Glengarnock Castle: Exploring Scotland's Medieval Heritage
Welcome to Glengarnock Castle, a historic fortress found in the most beautiful scenic countryside in Scotland. Located in North Ayrshire, this enchanting castle is a testament to Scotland's medieval past and offers a fascinating glimpse into the country's rich heritage.
Truly one of my favourite ruins to visit to date. The location of this castle is of itself a great reason to visit! Not the easiest to get to, or to find once you’ve been able to park the car - but that’s another point that adds to its charm.
Description
The castle's strategic location on a precipitous ridge overlooking the Garnock River provided both security and ease of defense. Access to the castle was possible only from the northeast, with a dry moat and drawbridge offering additional protection. Today, the ruins offer glimpses of its original structure, including a quadrilateral tower and a range of two-storied apartments. The upper story housed a spacious hall with impressive views of the surrounding area. Despite the absence of traditional defensive features, the castle's natural stronghold made it an imposing structure. Over the years, the castle accumulated a substantial midden below, filled with remnants of coal ash, broken tiles, patterned glass fragments, and more. Nearby, Garrat's Linn, a pool in the River Garnock, adds to the picturesque surroundings.
History
Glengarnock Castle has a rich history dating back to the 12th and 13th centuries. Originally held by the De Morville family, who were the Great Constables of Scotland, the castle may have been built as a strategic site near the Kilwinning Abbey. Over time, ownership passed to the Riddels and Cunninghames. Notable visits from Mary, Queen of Scots, and the construction of the Glengarnock Aisle by Sir James Cunningham added to its significance. The castle eventually fell into disuse and was acquired by Patrick Lindsay of Kilbirnie Place in 1677. It later became part of the Barony of Kilbirnie.
The castle's architecture reflects the transition from a fortified structure to a grand residence, showcasing the evolution of Scottish castle design.
