Favorite Day of Our Scottish Vacation Two Years in a Row

Last year, our Loch Lomond & Trossachs Day Tour with John Stevenson at Scotland’s Wild was so amazing, I immediately wrote my first ever Trip Advisor review! As soon as we booked our airfare for our second trip to Scotland this Summer, I booked John again to tour the Highlands and Glencoe, coincidentally for the same Saturday

John is the ultimate tour guide, who quickly analyzes your desires and skill level for your excursion. John is very easy to talk to, and we instantly got reacquainted catching up on our lives and our Scottish adventures. He caters the entire day to your family always listening to any interests you have and being flexible to include them in the day. John reminds you he is there to make this “Your Day”.

John took us to stunning Rannoch Moor first and then on two astonishing hikes.

Experience Scotland’s Wild exceeded our expectations and wishes for the second year in a row! He was like hiking with a long-time friend instead of a tour guide. He is one in a million! John also provided us with some of our best family vacation pictures and videos air dropping them to us on our cell phone at the end of the day. We feel so fortunate we were able to spend another day with him touring the Highlands and Glencoe. John’s magnificent tours will always be a very special part of our memories of Scotland! Best of Luck, John, as you continue to expand your business! We hope to see you again in the future; maybe at Disney World in Florida!

Derek did a wonderful job showing 7 middle aged ladies the highlands and Glencoe. No question was unanswered, he took group pictures for us and even gave me a short Scottish language lesson (a video for my Scottish scavenger hunt list!), Next time, we will definitely use this tour company.

My friend and I booked the Highlands and Glencoe tour for our first trip to Scotland. It was such an amazing introduction to a beautiful country. Derek was a fantastic guide and was knowledgeable and passionate about Scotland. I was really pleased the tours only require a minimum of 2 people as my friend and I were the only ones on our tour. Derek even threw in a few surprises that made a great day even better! The information we learned from Derek while on our hikes, we were able to use during the rest of our trip. I would highly recommend Scotland's Wild and would definitely book with them again!

Hello, we had two tours during our stay in Balloch / Scotland / Loch Lomomnd and can only recommend these tours with this agency. John, who was our guide on both trips, is a very pleasant, friendly and sympathetic person who could answer all our questions and bring us closer to the country. We can definitely recommend the Glencoe Highland Tour. A tour that will not be forgotten so quickly, especially as John does not stop at the usual tourist spots.Fantastic.

Many thanks and greeting, Moni and Hartmut from Hamburg

  • We’d say that Glencoe and the Scottish Highlands are a must visit locations on any trip to Scotland. We’ll start your wonderful day tour of Glencoe and the Scottish Highlands by departing Scotland’s largest city of Glasgow.

You’ll travel from Glasgow towards Dumbarton over the River Clyde, the life source that this trendy city was founded on. As you make your way there, you’ll get some beautiful views looking west towards the Clyde estuary, where the fresh water from the river meets the salt water from the Sea. On a clear day you should be able to see Dumbarton Castle, this historic location has links to William Wallace, Mary Queen of Scots and King Robert the Bruce, with the latter two believed to have been held captive in the pits below the Castle. This is also the location where a Viking army moored their longboats before spending months raiding the local area for slaves and goods over 1200 years ago.

You’ll eventually reach Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park and get some magnificent views looking out over Loch Lomond as you pass through the Highland Boundary Fault Line. This is the magical moment you officially enter the grand Scottish Highlands and gain a sense of what the rugged mountainous landscape is really like.

After reaching the northern section of Loch Lomond, we’ll stop for you to enjoy some beautiful waterfalls. After a good Scottish downpour, these falls really come to life and create a roaring noise that clashes off every rock and fills every part of the Glen with a thunderous sound. From here we’ll keep travelling towards Glencoe where you’ll get the chance to see some beautiful Caledonian Pine Forest, this is a lovely reminder of the ancient landscape which used to cover much of the Scottish mainland.

You’ll then get out for a beautiful short hike along Scotland’s premier walking route, the West Highland Way as we make our way towards a lovely small lochan (small lake). It’s believed King Robert the Bruce threw his sword in this lochan to lighten his load, as he was trying to escape the onslaught from a surprise ambush by the MacDougall’s of Lorne. This battle is known as the Battle of Dail Righ, and the battle ground is not far from where you’ll be walking.

You’ll continue towards Glencoe where on the south of the entrance to the Glen, you’ll see the grandeur of Buachaille Etive Mor, the pyramid shaped mountain stands proudly guarding the entrance to Glencoe and is known by its Gaelic translation as the Great Herdsman. This name relates to the McDonald’s of Glencoe who were known as notorious cattle thieves and used the mountain to guide themselves back into Glencoe after a successful night raiding cattle from their neighbour’s lands.

Now is the time to experience one of the most gorgeous locations to be found anywhere in Scotland, the rugged, dramatic land of Glencoe. This alluring landscape captures the imagination of almost anyone who travels through the Glen, and you’ve likely seen it before, as the seductive beauty of Glencoe and the surrounding area has featured in many movies and T.V shows, such as, Outlander, Harry Potter, Braveheart, Rob Roy, Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Highlander and most recently in Netflix’s Outlaw King featuring Chris Pine.

While in Glencoe, you’ll also hear how the MacDonald Clan from these parts where made an example of by government soldiers not long after King William came to the throne in something called The Glencoe massacre, proof that there’s also a dark side to Scotland’s turbulent history.

Now is time for some food, and luckily for you, you’ll have the chance to enjoy a delicious lunch right in the heart of Glencoe, surrounded by wonderous Highland scenery.

After enjoying lunch, we travel to some beautiful multi-level waterfalls which come to life after a little rain. We get there by going for a nice short walk through some woodland where we’ll keep our eyes peeled for wildlife, most notably the ever shy and endangered Red Squirrels which are extremely rare to see, though, this might be one of the best locations in Scotland to spot them.

From the Roar of the Waterfalls to the tranquil serene setting of Rannoch Moor, this area is thought to be one of the last remaining true wilderness locations left in Europe with vast peat bogs, lovely Lochs, and flat moorland for miles in all direction. It contrasts the mountainous landscape nearby beautifully. In this area we hope to get you up close to some majestic Red Deer, Scotland’s largest land mammal, so we’ll keep on high alert as we try to spot these wonderful creatures, then if luck is on our side, you may even be able to get a wee selfie or two.

From the grandeur of the Highlands, we’ll now travel south towards the lowlands, stopping off for one final scenic delight at Loch Lomond before finishing the day tour back in Glasgow.

This Glencoe and Scottish Highlands guided Day Tour may be explored in reverse.

After the tour departs Glasgow, we may also pick-up clients in Balloch and drop them back in Balloch before the tour ends in Glasgow.
