Walking Holiday Grades

At experience Scotland's Wild, we want you to have a wonderful walking holiday with happy memories to last a lifetime  

We believe one of the keys to ensuring you and your group have a walking holiday experience to remember, for all the right reasons, is to pick a walking holiday that is suited your needs, capabilities and fitness.  

So for these reasons we put together a walking holiday grade system for all our walking vacations

   Easy
General Description Suitable for beginners, generally good condition, maintained paths, easy walking pace suitable for taking pictures and sightseeing
Terrain Maintained path, possible gentle climbs, minimal obstructions
Length Up to 7 Miles walking each day (11km)
Duration Up to 4 hours walking each day
   Leisurly
General Description Suitable for begginers, Basic level of fitness recommended along with sturdy walking boots, generally good condition, easy walking pace suitable for taking pictures and sightseeing
Terrain Maintained path, possible gentle climbs, minimal obstructions, though there may be slippery, uneven or muddy areas of path
Length Usually between 7-12 miles each day (11-19km)
Duration Between 4-7 hours walking each day
   Moderate
General Description A good level of fitness recommended along with sturdy walking boots, possible mountain paths, more obstruction and natural features, changing terrain and more exposure to the elements, steeper and/or more frequent ascents, longer days walking
Terrain Remoter locations, more obstructions, burn crossing, stepping stones, muddy, slippery and uneven ground, possibly higher altitude paths, steeper ascents, stalkers paths, ridge walks
Length Usually between 12-18 miles each day (19-29km)
Duration Between 7-10 hours walking each day
   Tougher Challenge
General Description A good level of fitness recommended along with sturdy walking boots, possible mountain paths, more obstruction and natural features, changing terrain and more exposure to the elements, steeper and/or more frequent ascents, longer days walking some of which could be a brisk walk or with limited light
Terrain Remoter locations, more obstructions, burn crossing, stepping stones, muddy, slippery and uneven ground, possibly higher altitude paths, steeper ascents, stalkers paths, ridge walks
Length Usually over 18 miles each day (29km)
Duration Over 10 hours walking each day

Important advice

  • Our walking holiday grading system is for guidance only and you have to understand your current level of fitness and capabilities
  • We recommend you exercise and improve your level of fitness and capabilities before participating in any length of walking holiday 
  • Keep in mind that adverse weather, terrain conditions, distance, fitness levels and any medical conditions may have an effect on the difficulty of your walking holiday
